Reddit asks: what should you check before choosing a growth service?
A pre-purchase checklist, built from what actually goes wrong.

This exact question gets posted to r/InstagramMarketing regularly, and the answers are usually vague. Here are five checks that take about ten minutes, each one derived from a complaint that recurs across the category's public review records.
Every service in this market says the same words — real followers, organic growth, no bots. The claims are identical, so they are useless for choosing. What separates them is what you can verify before paying.
The five checks
- Read the one-star reviews first, not the score. Trustpilot weights recent reviews heavily, so a high headline number can sit on top of a badly split record. One service in this directory shows 4.9 out of 5 while 29% of its lifetime reviews are one-star.
- Check whether they name real clients. Of 15 services surveyed, one publishes named client accounts with before-and-after figures. Eleven publish no client accounts you can open at all. Testimonials with first names are not evidence.
- Find out if they want your password. Reviewers of several services report the password requirement only being disclosed after card details were entered, and in one case logins appearing from another country.
- Test the cancellation route before you subscribe. Cancellation obstruction is the single most common billing complaint in the category — unanswered requests, chat-only cancellation, and charges continuing after cancellation.
- Separate a guarantee from a trial. A free trial is not a refund. At least one service advertises a guarantee that, read closely, offers a trial extension rather than money back.

What is the biggest red flag?
No named clients you can independently check.
Anyone can write a testimonial. Very few services publish real, public Instagram handles with growth figures attached, because doing so invites verification. Its absence is not proof of anything on its own, but its presence is the strongest single signal available.
Does a high Trustpilot score mean it is safe?
Not by itself — check the one-star share and the recent review count.
The headline score is time-weighted. A service with few recent reviews can hold a high number while its lifetime record is heavily split. Both figures are on the profile page and take seconds to read.
Is cheaper worse?
In this category, price tracks method more than quality.
The $19–$64/month tier is almost entirely automated software. Managed human outreach starts around $99. That is not a guarantee of quality either way, but it explains most of the price spread.
