Reddit asks: I got shadowbanned after buying followers — now what?

A recurring r/InstagramMarketing question, answered practically.

Last updated

This is asked on r/InstagramMarketing in almost exactly these words, usually alongside “did you make a new account?”. The short answer: reach usually recovers, and starting over is rarely the right trade.

What people call a shadowban is generally a reach reduction rather than a formal penalty. It is worth separating the two, because they behave differently.

Follow-up questions

Should I start a new account?

Usually not — you would discard every real follower and all your history.

Account age and posting history carry weight. Recovery is slow but generally beats starting from zero, unless the account was almost entirely purchased followers to begin with.

How long does recovery take?

Typically weeks, and it depends on how many fake followers remain.

The ratio only improves as fake followers are removed and real reach returns. There is no switch to flip.

Can a growth service fix it?

No service can remove followers you bought elsewhere.

Adding more followers on top of a damaged ratio does not repair it. Clear the fake accounts first, then consider growth.
