Reddit asks: are Instagram follower bots still a thing?
Yes — and the public complaint record shows exactly what they look like.
Last updated
Yes. r/BotNation and r/FixMyInstagram both carry active threads on this, and the public review records of paid growth services describe the same thing in detail.
The useful part is not whether bots exist — it is what they look like, because the descriptions are remarkably consistent across services and across years.
What reviewers consistently describe
- Arrival in timed batches. Followers appearing 10–15 at a time, every few hours, rather than steadily.
- Accounts created days ago. One reviewer noted profiles less than a day old, with about half having exactly six posts each.
- Numbered usernames and empty profiles. Reviewers of one service report handles like “usernames52732” with no photos at all.
- Rapid drop-off. Purchased followers disappearing within three to five days, in several reports by half or more.
- No engagement whatsoever. Large follower counts with no likes, comments or saves — which lowers the engagement rate the algorithm reads.
Follow-up questions
How do I tell if my followers are bots?
Open five of them. Real accounts have posts, followers and history.
Empty profiles, stock avatars, numbered usernames, thousands of accounts followed and almost none following back — those are the signatures reviewers describe over and over.
Do bot followers hurt my account?
Yes, in two ways: engagement rate and platform risk.
A large following that never engages drags down the ratio Instagram uses to judge whether content is worth distributing. Separately, reviewers across several services report account warnings and suspensions following bot-follower influxes.
Can bot followers get me banned?
Reviewers of several services report exactly that.
The published complaint records include a 2011-registered account suspended and another permanently disabled, both attributed by their owners to automated growth tools.
